2013 Programs:
Wednesday, March 15, 7 p.m. - Powder Horns
Annual meeting, 7 p.m.
A brief "State of the Society" annual report and election of officers for
2013-2014. The program will be about "powder horns". Town of Western
Historical Society member, Gary Eisenbeck, will share his collection of horns and discuss the history
of this critical necessity of 19th century America. these powder horns
were the companion to every musket in early American and were carried by
hunters, soldiers and explorers. They were as simple as a canvas bag to
highly decorated and inscribed horns or other materials. Refreshments will
follow the meeting and program. All are welcome.
Wednesday, June 9,
5 p.m.
Ribbon cutting to open
the new rear entrance and wheelchair lift at 5 p.m. The society will
welcome their benefactors and contractors: Community Foundation of
Herkimer, Oneida Counties, Barton Fund, Stewarts Shoppes,
Verizon Pioneers Foundation, Mapleleaf Construction and Mohawk Lift.
This
will be followed by An Old Fashioned Picnic in the Barton Hall. The cost
is $2.00 per person. Please call 841-4018 by June 5 for reservations.
Following the picnic, a special program by National Park Service Historian
Patrick Schroeder will take place. His topic is the 146th New York
Infantry-Gerrard's Tigers, who were raised in Oneida County, defended
Little Round Top at Gettysburg and fought at Fredericksburg,
Chancellorsville and Wilderness to name but a few battles. Join the ranks
of this unit from 1862 to 1865 via nearly 100 images from private research
and book, Campaigns of the 146th Regiment New York State Volunteers
written by M. Genevieve Brainard. A reproduction Zouave uniform will be on
display.
Wednesday, June 19,
7 p.m.
Program will highlight
the Waterville Art of John S. Pughe. Pughe was a cartoonist for
Puck Magazine. Learn about this talented Waterville resident and see
examples of his work from the WHS collection. Society Archivist, Doris
Stephan, and her volunteers have done a great deal of work cataloging and
organizing the Society's collection of such works. Refreshments will
follow the meeting and program. All are welcome.
